UNP MPs stage protest in Parliament
UNP MPs staged a protest in Parliament today against govt's plans to introduce amendments to the constitution and vowed to fight to protect the rights of the public.
The protest took part soon after the UNP held a special Parliamentary group meeting where the party reforms report was presented.
UNP MPs carrying placards and chanting slogans said they were opposed to the constiutional changes saying it was an attempt to extend the tenure of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to remain in power continously and called for the implementation of the 17th amendment.
"We will be taking our protests to the streets", UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told journalists.
